Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a relatively new procedure devised to improve the minor skin imperfections. The basic principle of Microdermabrasion is to polish the skin. Even since its introduction a few years ago, the procedure has been widely used in many spas and cosmetic clinics. The procedure entails the use of different types of fine crystals in a small device. The crystals are rotated at a fast speed and essentially remove all debris and dead skin cells from the superficial skin layers. The end result is a skin which appears radiant, fresh and has a very smooth texture.
Microdermabrasion can be performed on any part of the body but is frequently used on the face. Unlike dermabrasion, it is used to treat very mild acne scars, fine lines, skin discoloration, early sun damaged skin, and improve the texture of uneven skin.
Microdermabrasion can be used on all types of skin and in all races. The best response, however, is seen in individuals less than 55 years of age. Individuals with deep scars and wrinkles generally do not show a good response.
Microdermabrasion is usually performed by a therapist in a spa and rarely takes more than 20-30 minutes. The hand held device is placed over the skin and the revolving crystals gently remove the superficial layers of the skin. The dead skin and debris are sucked up by a vacuum. Once the procedure is completed, a moisturizing cream is applied to the skin. For the optimal cosmetic benefit, most individuals require at least 4-6 sessions spaced over a period of 2-4 weeks.
